What is the CPI?
The Consumer Price Index measures the average change over time in the prices urban consumers in the US pay for a basket of goods and services, from food and fuel to rent, medical care and transport. It is the most widely followed measure of US inflation and is published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Each report covers the previous month. The two headline figures are the change from the previous month, which is seasonally adjusted, and the change from the same month a year earlier. Core CPI excludes food and energy, whose prices are volatile, and is often watched as a better guide to the underlying trend.
Housing costs, measured through rent and owners’ equivalent rent, are the largest component of the index, so they have a big influence on both headline and core inflation. The report also breaks down prices for hundreds of categories and regions.
Covers selected US releases only. A day without events here may still have other economic data.
When is CPI released?
The BLS releases the CPI at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on a date set in its annual schedule, usually between the 10th and the 15th of the month. The producer price index is often released within a day or two of the CPI. The table below lists every scheduled CPI date.
In UTC the release time is 12:30 while the US is on daylight saving time and 13:30 the rest of the year. During the few weeks when Europe and the US change clocks on different dates, the gap shrinks or grows by an hour for European time zones; the countdown on this page uses the exact rules for each date.
The date a CPI report is released and the month it covers are different: a report released in November describes October prices. This page shows both the release date and the reference period for each report.
Why do markets watch CPI?
Price stability is one of the Federal Reserve’s two goals, and the Fed targets inflation of 2 percent over time. A CPI reading above or below expectations can change the expected path of interest rates, which affects Treasury yields, the US dollar, gold and stock prices.
In the minutes after 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on release day, US dollar pairs, gold, Treasury futures and US index futures often move quickly and spreads can widen. Cryptocurrency markets have also become sensitive to US inflation data. TickClock does not forecast the figures or the reaction; it only shows when the report is scheduled.
The Fed’s preferred inflation gauge is the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, published later in the month. PCE is not included in this calendar yet.

FAQ
What time is CPI released in my time zone?
At 8:30 a.m. New York time: 12:30 UTC during US daylight saving time and 13:30 UTC in winter. The countdown above converts the next release to your browser’s time zone.
What is the difference between headline and core CPI?
Headline CPI includes all items. Core CPI excludes food and energy, which tend to swing more from month to month, so it is often used to judge the underlying trend of inflation.
Which month does a CPI report cover?
The previous month. For example, the report released in mid-November covers prices in October. The schedule table on this page lists the reference month of every report.
Is CPI the Fed’s main inflation measure?
The Fed’s 2 percent target is defined in terms of the PCE price index, not CPI. CPI is released earlier and is watched very closely, but the two measures use different weights and coverage.
Can the CPI release date change?
Yes. The BLS can reschedule releases, as it did after the government shutdown in late 2025. TickClock updates the dates when the BLS announces changes and shows when the schedule was last checked.
