A different offset in January and July means the city uses daylight saving time.

How it works

Every time zone is defined by its offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Beijing is UTC+8 all year, Tokyo UTC+9, and Mumbai UTC+5:30. A conversion is simply the difference between two offsets at the same moment: when it is 21:00 in Beijing (UTC+8), it is 13:00 UTC, and New York in summer (UTC−4) shows 09:00 the same morning.

Daylight saving time makes the difference change during the year. The US moves its clocks forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November. The EU and the UK change on the last Sundays of March and October. Australia’s south-east (Sydney) switches the other way, from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April. China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, the UAE, Russia, Turkey and Brazil do not use daylight saving time.

Because the switch dates differ, the gap between two cities is not fixed. Beijing is 12 hours ahead of New York in summer and 13 hours in winter. London and New York are usually 5 hours apart, but only 4 for about three weeks in March and one week in late October. The converter uses the rules in force on the date you enter, so planning a call or a trade weeks ahead gives the right answer.

Pick a time zone and enter a date and time; the result shows the same moment in the target zone, the difference in hours and whether the date changes. The table lists that moment in all the cities, with each city’s UTC offset and whether daylight saving time applies. Use Now to go back to the live time.

For traders, the time zone of the exchange is what counts. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq follow New York time, the London Stock Exchange London time, and Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen follow UTC+8 all year. For live opening hours and countdowns, use the market clock on the home page.

Formula

  • UTC = local time − local UTC offset
  • Target time = UTC + target UTC offset
  • Difference = target offset − source offset (both on the chosen date)
  • Offsets include daylight saving time when it is in effect

Example

A call at 21:30 on 15 July in Beijing (UTC+8) is 13:30 UTC, which is 09:30 the same day in New York (UTC−4, summer time) and 14:30 in London (UTC+1). On 15 January the same Beijing time is 08:30 in New York (UTC−5) and 13:30 in London (UTC+0).

FAQ

What is the time difference between Beijing and New York?

Beijing is 12 hours ahead of New York during US daylight saving time (mid-March to early November) and 13 hours ahead the rest of the year, because China does not change its clocks.

What is the time difference between London and New York?

Usually 5 hours. For about three weeks in March and one week in late October it is 4 hours, because the US and the UK change clocks on different dates.

Does China use daylight saving time?

No. All of mainland China uses Beijing time, UTC+8, all year. Hong Kong and Taiwan are also UTC+8 without daylight saving time.

Is UTC the same as GMT?

For everyday use, yes: both are the zero offset. UTC is the precise scientific standard, while GMT is also the name of the UK’s winter time. In summer the UK uses BST, UTC+1.

Why do some zones have half-hour offsets?

Some countries chose offsets between whole hours. India uses UTC+5:30 and Nepal UTC+5:45. The converter handles them like any other zone.

Does the converter account for daylight saving time?

Yes. It uses the time zone rules built into your browser for the exact date you enter, including past and future changes.

Which time zone do stock exchanges use?

Each exchange uses its own local time: New York time for NYSE and Nasdaq, London time for the LSE, UTC+8 for Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen, and UTC+9 for Tokyo.
