How it works
In isolated mode only the margin assigned to this position can be lost. The position is liquidated when its remaining margin falls to the maintenance margin plus the fee to close it.
The result is an estimate. Exchanges liquidate on the mark price, use tiered maintenance rates, and funding payments change your margin over time. Always check the figure your exchange shows.
Formula
- Quantity Q = position value ÷ entry price P
- Initial margin = position value ÷ leverage; margin M = initial margin + added margin
- Long: L = (Q·P − M − cum) ÷ (Q·(1 − mmr − fee))
- Short: L = (Q·P + M + cum) ÷ (Q·(1 + mmr + fee))
- Bankruptcy price: long P − M ÷ Q, short P + M ÷ Q
- PnL = (exit − entry) × Q × (1 for long, −1 for short); ROE = PnL ÷ initial margin
Example
Long 5,000 USDT of BTC at 100,000 with 10× leverage: Q = 0.05 BTC, margin 500 USDT. With a 0.4% maintenance rate and 0.05% closing fee, the liquidation price is about 90,407.
FAQ
Why is my exchange showing a slightly different price?
Exchanges use the mark price, tiered maintenance rates and their own fee schedule, and funding changes your margin. Use the maintenance amount field to match your tier.
Does it work for coin-margined (inverse) contracts?
No. Inverse contracts use a different formula and are not covered.
What is the bankruptcy price?
The price at which your margin would be exactly zero. Liquidation happens before it so the exchange can close the position.
